Currently….

October 24, 2017 Erin

Do you like that featured image? Get it?!  Currently... the current of the river....  Haha.  Nevermind. Saving: My emergency fund! A couple weeks ago I had some car trouble that wiped out most of my e-fund. My lovingly assembled Baby Step One fund! I'm trying not to let it get to me, and I'm trying… Continue reading Currently….

Accountability Time: Resetting the Program

July 28, 2017 Erin

I’ve had another spendy week, y’all. And it all comes down to bad planning and a lack of discipline. We all know this—changing everything about the way we interact with money can be an enormous struggle. Our feelings about money are so complex and wrapped up in our feelings about family, safety, gender role expectations,… Continue reading Accountability Time: Resetting the Program

Surviving Family Vacation!

July 24, 2017July 24, 2017 Erin

July is prime summer vacation time! Many frugally minded folks choose to spend their sparse vacation time with family or friends because it can be a smart financial choice. Side note, did you know that American workers have like the fewest vacation days of any developed country? Too bad time off boosts productivity…… Anyway….. Back… Continue reading Surviving Family Vacation!

Monday Check-In

June 26, 2017 Erin

Accountability time. Last week I did a fantastic job sticking to my cash envelope system. I even had extra cash leftover that I put in my "squirrel funds" for upcoming expenses like Christmas, rental insurance, and clothing purchases. Then on Sunday I made the mistake of window shopping. Which turned into the mistake of actual… Continue reading Monday Check-In

Five Frugal Things: Summer Solstice Edition

June 23, 2017 Erin

It's summer! Here we go! First: Last week I started using a cash envelope system. At first I just used paperclips and Post-It notes to keep my cash together, but it was a little cumbersome taking the paperclips off and replacing them every time.  SO, I made my own envelopes! And so far I've stayed… Continue reading Five Frugal Things: Summer Solstice Edition

Money Monday: Five Frugal Things

June 5, 2017 Erin

Last week was a doozy.  Let's take a look: -I returned some clothes that I bought online. It's been a long time since I impulsively shopped like this. Recently I've found myself relying on this kind of negative coping mechanism when dealing with my stress-- shopping, eating, binge-watching TV. Once I hit the weekend, though,… Continue reading Money Monday: Five Frugal Things

Five Frugal Things: No-Spend Weekend Edition

May 9, 2017May 15, 2017 Erin

After a couple of very expensive weeks out in the field, I was feeling a little short on cash as the weekend approached. I had been spending too much money on coffee, and I'd really racked up some mileage on my car. By the time Thursday rolled around I was so relieved to open my… Continue reading Five Frugal Things: No-Spend Weekend Edition

How did I end up overspending in the food category by almost $500? Oh wait, I know. Emotional eating. No meal plan. Waking up at the last possible minute. I could keep dwelling on this negative self talk, but instead I want to think about what my January audited budget taught me. First, I overbudgeted in the transportation category. I traveled less last month than expected, and even my planned travel costs were less than normal. I will be adjusting this amount for my February budget. The same goes for the lifestyle portion of my budget. What that actually means is.....I didn't get out much! My biggest social expense for January was my visit to @fancypants for our nearly annual cousin retreat, and even that was cheap because we're both chasing financial independence. Finally, these numbers remind me that a budget is a living document. It's a list of priorities with numbers attached. What do I want to value in my life, and how do I want to pay for it? In total, I paid $1845.76 toward debt in January. My goal for February is $2k!
